NIGP: The Institute for Public Procurement stages the 2016 NIGP Forum Aug. 21-24 at National Harbor, Md. The theme of this year’s show is “Experience the Awesomeness.” It is the largest North American conference exclusively for public procurement.

Almost 1,000 public procurement professionals will be at the show. There, they will learn from subject matter experts in the procurement field by attending relevant, real-world educational workshops—a total of 100 workshops and networking opportunities in all. Attendees can visit with nearly 200 suppliers during the show’s products exposition on Sunday and Monday, Aug. 21 and 22.

On Monday during the NIGP Forum, attendees can listen to this presentation: “Co-ops 101: Practices, Programs and Assessment.” Brent Maas, Executive Director, Business Strategy & Relationships at NIGP is the presenter.

This session provides a foundation for better understanding the cooperative landscape. It will focus on the fundamental approaches to cooperative procurement and how they are implemented through “cooperative programs.” The presenter will review the profiles of national, regional, and market-centric programs to identify their approach to cooperative practice, and how the contracts promoted by the programs reflect that approach. Through the session’s review, attendees will experience a process for more quickly assessing and recognizing those programs with contracts that may (or may not) be better suited for use by their agencies.

On Tuesday during Forum, the following presentation will be staged: “Managing the Politics of Procurement.” The presenter is Dan Marran, CPPO, C.P.M., Contracts and Risk Manager, Sparks, Nev.

About the presentation: Procurement professionals are not hired to be politicians. However, we must work in a world where political awareness can be critically important to the successful execution of our tasks. We would be naïve not to at least be aware of the political implications of our day-to-day interactions and how these interactions might affect the process of the job we were actually hired to do. This presentation discusses the various forces that impact the procurement function outside of the laws and ordinances that define legal process or procedure and how to maneuver to remain informed and credible to those we serve.

Plenary session speakers include Mel Robbins, Colette Carlson and Kai Kight.

Mel Robbins inspires change, challenges thinking and accelerates personal and business growth. Her TEDx Talk on “How To Stop Screwing Yourself Over” has over 3 million views.

Colette Carlson, founder of Speak Your Truth, Inc., is a human behavior expert, author and humorous keynote speaker who shares the tools, terminology and techniques that encourage people to excel. With a Master’s in Human Behavior and a fascination with communication trends, Carlson delivers the latest research, and she lets the facts support the fun.

Kai Kight uses music as a metaphor. He inspires individuals and organizations across the world to compose paths of imagination and fulfillment. Kight was a classical violinist who became a composer. Kight is on a mission to spark a global mindset shift in which ingenuity is the norm, not the exception. The title of Kight’s keynote speech is “Composing Your World.”
