Full-hybrid SUV recharges its battery while it drives
Fuel-efficient 2005 Escape Hybrid SUV draws its power from a 2.3-liter gasoline engine and a 330-v., NiMH battery to run on engine or battery power, or both. Gasoline engine starts up when ignition key turns, shuts off if it isnt needed or while at idle, and turns on/off automatically depending on driving conditions. Hybrid system draws additional power from battery to drivetrain to boost acceleration. When traveling at low speeds or in stop-and-go conditions, vehicle runs off battery alone. No need to plug in to rechargeinternal combustion engine recharges battery while driving. In addition, regenerative braking system recovers heat energy from the wheels during braking and stores it in the battery. Boasts fuel economy of more than 35 m.p.g. in city driving and low emissions that meet both SULEV and PZEV standards. Available in front-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. Seats 5 passengers. Matches cargo capacity of conventional Escape SUVs and tows up to 1,000 lbs.
