North Carolina county relies on cloud-based management tool for mobile devices (with related video)
It is no secret that state and local government agencies have become accustomed to doing more with less. While budget challenges have become the norm, government executives are also faced with needing to continually provide expanded services to citizens.
One of the most effective methods for achieving this is to fully empower the work force to be more efficient and productive. Fortunately, next-generation IT solutions can help achieve this goal. However, with a high volume of government employees, technology can cause challenges, such as device proliferation, security, and IT management issues.
In North Carolina, Mecklenburg County effectively tackled all of these hurdles head-on, while also saving approximately $3.2 million per year on reduced hardware costs. The system also enabled substantial savings in time.
As part of its “One Person, One Device” initiative, the county gave each employee a single device, and streamlined device management with VMware Horizon View.
As a result, Mecklenburg County Youth and Family Services social workers, Park and Recreation employees, and Food Service inspectors now use tablets and virtual desktops to securely access and input information on the go.
From a security perspective, this new implementation helps protect citizen data that county employees collect and process. It also helps in meeting compliance requirements for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Personal Health Information (PHI), and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
This effort improved the reach and availability of county services. In addition, because data doesn’t reside on any individual device, citizens can rest assured that the data county employees collect and process is protected.
Thankfully, doing more with less is possible with the right innovations. Mecklenburg County serves as the ideal case study for how other county government across the U.S. can enhance employee effectiveness, while also saving money.
