Detective’s children’s book addresses domestic violence
Longmont, Colo., Detective Sara Pierce has written a children’s book that explains domestic violence in a story format, using words and situations that young children understand.
“On a Dark, Dark Night” is an illustrated hard-cover book that aims to help small children understand and cope with their experiences with domestic violence through the story of a young polar bear cub who witnesses his father strike his mother. The Cub finds help and support from his friend Moose and a new friend Eagle.
“Domestic violence is such a hard subject to acknowledge, especially for children,” Pierce said.
The Longmont Ending Violence Initiative (LEVI) published the book as part of its domestic violence prevention, education and awareness efforts. “On a Dark, Dark Night” is available for $16.95 through www.longmontdomesticviolence.org and Amazon.com. All proceeds from the book will be set aside to fund future editions.
