NASCIO, White House observe National Cyber Security Awareness Month
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the Lexington, Ky.-based National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) and the White House are joining other government and private agencies in efforts to educate the public on securing the Internet. This is the sixth year for observing the month, which is sponsored by the Washington-based the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).
Many states are holding cyber summits, briefings or educational events, a list of which is available on NASCIO’s cyber security resource page, http://www.nascio.org/advocacy/cybersecurity/. The Senate passed a resolution officially declaring October as Cyber Security Awareness Month, and an official White House blog entry links to the NASCIO resource page.
“As stated in the President’s Cyberspace Policy Review, cybersecurity is a national priority and is vital to our economy and the security of our nation,” John Brennan, deputy national security advisor and assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, wrote in the blog. “The financial industry, our government networks, and your home computers are under continual attack from a variety of malicious actors, including domestic hackers, international organized crime rings, and foreign intelligence agencies. They are stealing your identities and financial information, sensitive government data, and proprietary industry information.”
