As of Dec. 17, 2008, anyone in New London, Conn., who sells or gives away novelty lighters resembling toy guns or anything that might be attractive to children, may be burned by the law. The city council passed an ordinance banning the lighters to curb the number of fires started by juveniles.
New London Fire Chief Ronald Samul told the council that children often mistake the lighters for toys and feel inclined to play with them. Ordinance violators could face a fine of up to $100.
