Power IT Down Day to be held Aug. 27
On Aug. 27, information technology (IT) departments for more than 100 federal, state and local government agencies will make sure to turn off their computers, monitors and printers at the end of the day for Power IT Down Day. The event, sponsored by Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.-based Citrix, Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP and Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel, also will include private sector IT departments, and is expected to save 16,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.
Nearly 60 percent of employed adults in the U.S. do not turn their PC off at night, according to Citrix. “The savings from avoiding unnecessary power to idle monitors, processors and peripherals is compelling,” Tom Simmons, area vice president for Citrix’s public sector division, said in a statement. “Turning off even one PC can make a difference.”
