In the last 100 years, what exactly has the U.S. learned about emergency management? The Fairfax, Va.-based Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI) answers that question in its new book, “Emergency Management: The American Experience 1900-2005” ($35). Edited by Claire Rubin, disaster researcher and consultant, the book covers more than a century of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and droughts. Each chapter explains how lessons learned from historical events changed emergency management functions and systems over time. Available at www.riskinstitute.org/PERI/Bookstore.
