New York eases requirements for new firefighters to improve diversity

New York has reduced its academic requirements for applicants for the city’s fire department and will begin accepting job experience as a substitute for college credit for those taking the entrance exam. The changes are part of an effort to improve diversity in the department that has been the subject of a federal complaint from an association of black city firefighters and an ongoing Justice Department investigation, according to The New York Times. The new applicants that pass the test will have to pass a longer, more rigorous probationary period, and critics say more still has to be done to assure that minority members who pass the test are actually hired.
