The Washington Liquor Control Board is considering a request from Seattle to designate more than six square miles of the city a mandatory “alcohol-impact area,” in which stores could not sell beer, malt liquor and fortified wines.

According to The Seattle Times, the ban is aimed at clearing homeless alcoholics from city streets and follows a strategy used in nearby Tacoma to rejuvenate a neighborhood that has struggled with crime.
