Hybrid propulsion drives full-size pickups
Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups offer hybrid gasoline/electric powertrains for fleet vehicles. Flywheel Alternator Starter system uses compact 14,400-w. electric motor integrated between engine and transmission instead of conventional starter and alternator to generate up to 2,400 w. of continuous electric power. Regenerative braking and engine start/stop function turn motor into a generator as truck decelerates, shutting off fuel during coasting or braking. Gasoline-powered, 295-hp., Vortec 5300 V-8 engine drives the battery to run wheels in low-demand conditions such as coasting and braking for fuel savings. Powerplant stores electricity in 42-v., lead-acid battery pack with 4, 120-v./20-amp auxiliary power outlets that can be used to run onboard electric accessories, power tools, even appliances. Choose extended-cab pickups with 4-speed automatic transmissions and in both 2- and 4-wheel drive.
