On Memorial Day, Paramount, Calif., and the Paramount Elks Club held a ceremony to dedicate a newly redesigned War Memorial Plaza in the Civic Center. The plaza includes a Veterans Memorial Wall built in 1973 with the names of 43 residents who died in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and several smaller walls for each conflict. The city reworked the plaza, adding a walkway, landscaping, lighting and a 13-foot-tall stainless steel sculpture by Mark Leichliter that features a life-sized image of a soldier and a globe on top made of the same type of marble used for the tomb of the “Unknown Soldier.” Nearby, a mosaic tile star embedded in the plaza honors all military branches.
