Recycled-material sidewalks
Terrewalks, a pavement system manufactured by Rubbersidewalks, meets several of the criteria outlined in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. These include use of recycled content, effective stormwater management and heat island reduction. The only material used in Terrewalks is post-consumer (mainly scrap tires and low-density polyethylene), and the pavement is permeable to promote storm drainage into an underbase channel-collection system. A solar-reflection index of 44.26 (in the TerreCool version) helps prevent Terrewalks from contributing to the temperature increase common in developed areas due to the absence of vegetation.
