Join nearly 6,000 public works professionals in Phoenix for the American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works Congress & Exposition. The show takes place August 30 to September 2. Long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad, decorated Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and author Dan McNichol will address general sessions at the Congress.

Attendees can choose from more than 125 technical and professional development sessions covering sustainable practices, stormwater, emergency preparedness, livable communities, career development, work force solutions and other topics. Experts from APWA’s 2015 Emerging Leaders Academy will discuss drones, unmanned vehicles, intelligent transportation systems and other cutting-edge public works technologies.

More than 400 exhibitors will showcase new products and offer prize drawings. APWA’s exhibit floor encompasses nearly 90,000 square feet. The expo/exhibit area includes a Technology Pavilion, a Green Pavilion, Central Park and a variety of New Product Showcases. The expo area also has an Exhibitor Solutions Theater, where Congress registrants can earn CEUs. Registrants also get lunch on the exhibit floor on Sunday and Monday during the show.

APWA offers Congress attendees many opportunities to meet and mingle with their public works peers—the Get Acquainted Party, Awards Ceremony and other networking sessions.

Metal buildings: Their versatility and durability suit them for public sector infrastructure
Some cities and counties are looking at one structure type to help them meet their infrastructure needs, says Phil Skellorn, senior structural engineer at Buro Happold, an engineering and consulting services firm. “Some public owners are looking at metal buildings as an economical option.” Skellorn says metal buildings can offer advantages if the off-the-shelf product […]

The future of parking in the 15-minute city
At first glance, the 15-minute city spells the end for the parking industry. Designed specifically to cut emissions from private car usage, the city planning model calls for decentralized neighborhoods where residents can live, learn, shop and work without needing to drive. The 15-minute city would enable people to get anywhere they need to go […]

Local leaders, NLC gather on Capital Hill to advocate for railway safety legislation
Following approval last week of the bipartisan Railway Safety Act by the Senate Commerce Committee—with an added amendment commissioning the National Academy of Sciences to study frequently blocked railway crossings—local leaders continued their push for its full Congressional approval Wednesday at an advocacy briefing on Capitol Hill hosted by the National League of Cities (NLC).  […]
