Put the gun down!
Owning an illegal assault weapon in New Jersey just got riskier.
Owning an illegal assault weapon in New Jersey just got riskier. In February, Gov. Jon Corzine signed legislation that imposes harsher penalties on individuals that have contraband firearms, such as machine guns and assault rifles. The new law increases the classification of banned weapons from a third-degree to a second-degree crime, which carries a penalty of five to 10 years in prison or a $150,000 fine. “Machine guns have been virtually outlawed nationally for civilian possession since the 1930s, and assault guns have been outlawed in our state for almost 20 years,” Corzine said in a statement. “There is no excuse for anyone possessing either of these weapons.”
