The Silver Spring, Md.-based American Hiking Society is accepting applications for its 2009 National Trails Fund, which finances non-profit organizations that preserve community hiking trails. Ten non-profits will receive $5,000 each from the program by next April.
Since its inception 10 years ago, the grant program has provided $340,000 to 89 different hiking trail projects around the country. Minneapolis-based General Mills donated $50,000 through its Nature Valley Save the Trails program to double the size of the 2009 grants.
