The nation’s streetlight system could become a wide-area network for public utility, security and other applications, thanks to BrownBetty system. System creates a mesh network for communications between ground-based sensor and control devices and the Internet. System relies on ZigBee low-power wireless network technology. System enables plugging communication nodes into a streetlight’s standard NEMA twist-lock receptacles. Nodes automatically install themselves into the BrownBetty network, via ZigBee self-forming network technology. For utilities, potential applications include automatic meter reading, time-of-use metering, remote electric meter disconnect and utility GPS mapping. Sunrise Technologies, Raynham, Mass.
