For the fifth consecutive year, the Greensboro, N.C., Police Department accepted more than 100 stuffed teddy bears from the kindergarteners at Claxton Elementary School to be used in the department’s Ted E. Bear project. Officers give the stuffed bears to children at crime scenes, accidents, domestic violence calls and other unpleasant incidents. The bears wear miniature police badge replicas and are offered to comfort children and instill trust between them and the police. Since the project’s inception 19 years ago, the police department has given away as many as 100 bears annually.
