In the heartland
Teresa Schanzenbach, executive director of the Belle Fourche, S.D., Chamber of Commerce, sent this photo of the flag that waves at the center of the United States, the exact location of which was identified by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as a spot 20 miles north of Belle Fourche. After many years of comments from visitors that the marker was not grand enough to suit the designation, in August, the town unveiled a larger monument closer to the center of town to honor its unique title and to mark the beginning of the city’s downtown growth. An article about the project and a picture of the new monument appear on the last page of American City & County's October issue.
