Ham radio operators across the nation will participate in simulated emergencies from Oct. 6 to 7 to test their readiness to provide communications for government agencies in real emergencies. Scenarios for the test will include floods, wildfires, bombings and, for the first time, a flu pandemic.
Members of the Newington, Conn.-based American Radio Relay League’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) are conducting the tests. ARES members are trained amateur radio operators who provide communications for emergency agencies when other, more complex communications systems fail. For more information on the test, go to www.arrl.org.
