USCM releases report on asset management in water services
The Washington-based U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) has released a report on cities’ use of asset management programs to make their water and sewer systems more cost-effective. Approximately 75 percent of drinking water and wastewater treatment plants in the 330 cities included in the report use asset management practices.
According to the “National City Water Survey 2007: The Status of Asset Management Programs in Public Water and Sewer Infrastructure in America’s Major Cities,” local governments are responsible for 95 percent of investments in water and sewer services and infrastructure. In 2005, local governments spent $82 billion on water and sewer services, and USCM estimates that water and sewer expenses will increase to $110 billion annually by 2010.
