USCM resolution urges redeployment of troops from Iraq
During its 75th Annual Meeting, held in June, the Washington-based U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) passed a resolution urging the redeployment of troops out of Iraq. The last-minute resolution was hotly debated before passing on a vote of 51 to 47.
The resolution also called for the Bush administration to make future funding to the Iraqi government contingent on that government’s achievement of various goals, such as ridding Iraqi security forces of sectarian influence, and for full funding of services for returning veterans. Among the reasons for redeployment, according to the resolution, are the ongoing loss of life and the cost of the war, which interferes with the federal government’s funding for domestic programs.
