Sticks and stones
Four city workers in Hooksett, N.H., unexpectedly discovered the power of words in April when they were fired for gossiping about an alleged relationship between Town Administrator David Jodion and another employee, according to The Associated Press (AP). Jodion has said in a report that the rumor is false. The women, now known as “The Hooksett Four,” have appealed the terminations, and have said that other city workers also participated in the workplace discussions. Until the incident, the workers, who represent one-fourth of the city’s staff, had clean work records.
Too proud to be an American?
In May, Las Vegas city officials ordered a local car dealership to remove its 100-foot flagpole and oversized American flag that majestically flaps over its lot of luxury vehicles, according to AP. The city has received numerous complaints from residents, one of whom said that the flag’s flapping noise interrupts his sleep. Last year, the city agreed to support the dealership and its 30-foot-by-60-foot flag if a smaller memorial was built. A spokesperson for the dealership has said that a concrete pedestal to memorialize veterans is being constructed in an effort to meet city requirements.
