Speed Sensors and Cameras Monitor Freeway Drivers
Along the 101 State Highway in Scottsdale, AZ, a stationary network of sensors and cameras is helping to enforce speed limits, while reducing traffic accidents and injuries. Said to be the first-of-its-kind monitoring network, the technology includes in-road sensors that measure vehicle speeds, along with cameras that photograph drivers exceeding the stated speed limit. Made by Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc., based in Scottsdale, AZ, the network ends the need for on-site police officers to monitor vehicle speeds. Instead, the sensors measure the speed of each passing vehicle. If detecting that a vehicle is traveling faster than the programmed speed limit, the sensors trigger roadside cameras to capture a series of images. One camera then photographs the license plate of the speeding vehicle, while another camera provides an image of the offending driver. In turn, city officials review the images, before a photo-based speeding ticket is sent to the offending driver. Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc., Scottsdale, AZ
