Let’s play ball
Chuck Pula, parks and recreation director for Winter Springs, Fla., submitted this photo of the topiaries in the city’s 103-acre Central Winds Park. The park — which includes fields for baseball, softball and soccer, volleyball courts, pavilions, picnic grills, a playground and a nature trail — received a 2006 Grand Award in the Baltimore-based Professional Ground Management Society’s Green Star Awards competition. The park and its ball fields also won the Lawrence, Kan.-based Sports Turf Management Association’s Award as the best Parks and Recreation Sports Complex in the nation in 2004. The life-size topiaries of a baseball, football and soccer player are popular park features, near which parents often can be found snapping portraits of their children.
