Chicago department heads and senior staffers received a memo last month asking them to contribute $35 for a gift for Mayor Richard Daley. The contributions are supposed to be voluntary and the money will go to a charity overseen by the mayor’s wife, but the memo comes at a time when Daley’s administration is under scrutiny by federal investigators who want to crack down on corruption, according to the Chicago Tribune. At least one Daley aide says he did feel indirect pressure to contribute, but others say they are happy to give.
