Careful municipal clerks in Rhode Island and other states are playing a critical role in busting immigration scams involving phony marriages. The clerk in Cumberland, R.I., noticed a fake address on one marriage license application, and her investigation led to the discovery of more than 35 other fake marriages, according to The Boston Globe. Many of the couples involved, comprised of U.S. citizens who are paid to marry illegal immigrants, were noticeable because they couldn’t understand each other and could not say when and where they were going to get married.
