A San Francisco judge is considering appointing former San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos as the temporary receiver of the city’s troubled Housing Authority. The judge wants Agnos to force the agency to pay a $12 million judgment to the family of public housing tenants killed in a 1997 fire. Members of Mayor Gavin Newsom’s administration say Agnos may use the receivership to embarrass Newsom, whom he has opposed in the past, as part of a bid to return to city politics. Agnos denies that claim and says he’s been asked to help out because of his past experience as mayor and as a former regional director of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
