Neighborhood, labor and small-business groups in the Bronx in New York are trying to drum up opposition to any plans to open a Wal-Mart in their area, even though no such plans currently exist. Wal-Mart opponents have been successful in keeping the retailer out of other parts of New York, saying it destroys small businesses and offers only low-paying jobs. Wal-Mart officials say that, if they did open a store in the Bronx, it could create about 300 much-needed jobs and generate about $5 million in tax revenue.
