The city council of Elkport, Iowa, soon will be presiding over a lot of empty space. All 86 residents of the town left after a massive flood in May 2004 and agreed to a $1.6 million federal buyout in January 2005 that also included the nearby town of Garber. As a result, the 150-year-old community is scheduled for demolition, according to CNN.com. Only the community center and a baseball diamond will be left standing after the demolition, but the city council will continue to meet each month, Mayor Roger Bolsinger says, to “keep things barely alive.”
