Some of the biggest cities in Texas are joining forces to fight a plan by the state’s largest electric utility to build 11 new coal-fired power plants. Dallas Mayor Laura Miller and Houston Mayor Bill White, speaking for the 17-member Texas Cities for Clean Air Coalition, say the new plants would cause too much pollution and further delay the state’s compliance with federal mandates to clean up its air, according to The Dallas Morning News. Officials with the company, TXU Corp., say the new plants are far cleaner, and by 2011 they would produce 20 percent less air pollution than all of the state’s existing plants.
