Brain Power
The Chicago Police Department is optimistic that the Classification System for Serial Criminal Patterns (CSSCP) will provide a more effective method for searching through crime data. Chicago police detectives look for possible crime links in roughly 100 cases each week. However, the tedious task can result in detectives not connecting patterns shared between cases because of the large quantity of data. The CSSCP constantly seeks shared patterns between cases and allows detectives to conduct specific data searches and comparisons. The CSSCP, which uses pattern-recognition software, conducts its searches and comparisons of the department’s IT systems. Steve Maris, assistant director of Information Services for the Chicago Police Department, notes that a primary advantage offered by CSSCP is that it can recognize patterns not identified because of the huge caseload detectives manage each week.
