To Catch A Thief Via Gps
The three-year-old Denver firm Cartasite, which manufactures small black boxes equipped with GPS, works with transportation businesses to follow car fleets, rail cars, and cargo containers. Each box costs around $200 to implement and around $15 to $20 every month to monitor. In addition to location tracking, the devices can be utilized to help determine gas prices, routes, and operational efficiency. Kerr Vehicle Resources, also Denver-based, is implementing Cartasite devices in the 11,000 automobiles it leases to clients in the Rocky Mountain area. Cartasite recently helped a company locate a stolen truck in Florida that was transporting art worth millions of dollars. The Budget rental truck, filled with seven Milton Avery paintings and sculptures and antiques, went missing in mid April while being driven to New York from southern Florida. It took over two weeks for authorities to recognize that the truck had GPS. After police found out, it only took 10 minutes to find the truck and artwork and pick it up from an abandoned Gainesville, Fla., shopping center.
