Gps Tracks City Officers
The Charleston, W.Va., police department is installing GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Location devices that update an officer’s location every five seconds, allowing dispatchers and other officers to track their whereabouts.
The devices will be especially beneficial in chases, removing the need for officers to stay in constant radio communications with each other through integration with vehicle Mobile Data Terminals.
“If an officer needs help, this will map a route right to ’em,” says Lt. Steve Neddo, president of Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 74.
Future versions of the technology will speak directions. The system, costing about $46,000, was paid for through a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant.
