A study released Wednesday by the U.S./Mexico Border Counties Coalition says the 24 counties along the Southwest border are struggling to fund law enforcement and health programs because they are spending millions annually to care for illegal immigrants. Although the federal government reimburses state and local governments for services they provide, the report says that does not come close to covering the actual costs of services. According to USA Today, the Homeland Security Department is working to reduce the burden on states and locals by returning illegal immigrants to their native countries more quickly. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-03-07-immigrants-health_x.htm
