International pact would protect Great Lakes
Governors of the Great Lakes states and Ontario officials are expected Tuesday to sign an agreement that would ban new or increased diversions of water from the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River to other watersheds outside the drainage area and would require states and provinces to implement water-conservation programs.

According to the Chicago Tribune, also this week, a partnership of federal, state and local governments, among others, announced a $20 billion, 15-year plan to clean up the Great Lakes.
