The Chicago City Council has approved a smoking ban that covers most public places starting Jan. 16, but grants extensions to freestanding bars and taverns until July 2008. According to the Chicago Tribune, after last-minute negotiations, the ordinance also gives permanent exemptions to bars and taverns that install air purification equipment and ensure the same air quality inside as outside.
