Out of 650 million gallons of paint sold annually in the United States, approximately 34 million gallons remain unused, costing governments millions of dollars each year to recycle or dispose of, according to the Boston-based Product Stewardship Institute (PSI). To reduce surplus paint, last month Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Earth 911, PSI and the Washington-based National Paint and Coatings Association launched the Paint Wise Web portal that helps consumers calculate the amount of paint they need and gives instruction on storage methods and donation, recycling and disposal options.
