On Nov. 11, Chicago dedicated a redesigned Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the newly completed $4.3 million Wabash Plaza. The river-level plaza includes features from the original memorial as well as a new sculpture by local artist and Vietnam veteran Gary Tillery, a water wall and a black granite wall with the names of nearly 3,000 Illinois soldiers killed in action or reported missing during the Vietnam War. A timeline etched in granite pavement marks key battles and historical events from 1962 to 1973. The plaza, designed by locally based architectural firm Ross, Barney and Jankowski, is the first of several waterfront parks planned for the banks of the Chicago River.
