Earth-friendly roof crowns college building with attractive foliage
Multi-ply GreenShield roof system, has recently taken root at the Environmental Studies Building of Evergreen State College, located in Olympia, WA. Installed as part of a sustainable-design project, the roofing covers 13 separate, vegetative areas, totaling 24,000 sq. ft. In all, the roof includes 33 species of plants, including low-growing ground covers and perennial flowers. Foliage rests in lightweight soil (4 to 6 ins. deep), which absorbs and retains water to nourish plant life. In addition, the roof provides a long-term waterproofing solution for the facility. Roof construction includes a weather-resistant membrane. The roofing includes drainage and filter layers, insulation, and flashings that consist of recyclable stainless steel. Installation of the roof has helped the university manage stormwater run-off and has reduced requirements for a retention pond. The project earned the roof manufacturer a 2005 Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, an environmental group.
