Partnership Keeps City Clean and Green
The City of Baltimore and OutdoorPartner Media have joined forces to offer an innovative recycling initiative on the streets of Baltimore City.
Twenty-six PartnerBins — decorative litter and recycling receptacles — have been installed throughout the Inner Harbor, Downtown, Fells Point and Federal Hill areas in an effort to bring recycling to the pedestrian level, making it the first major city to offer this program.
In most cities, as residents and visitors are strolling through downtown and finish with a bottle of water, they find that they have no environmentally friendly place to toss the bottle, said Mayor Martin OMalley. Being the pioneering city that Baltimore is, we are pleased to be one of the first major cities to bring a recycling solution directly to pedestrians. The PartnerBins are strategically placed at high-traffic locations in downtown Baltimore, adjacent to main roadways. The bins, which hold 90 gallons and have separate collection points for waste and recyclables, were installed with no cost to the city.
OutdoorPartner Media sells advertising on four sides, with the revenue from the advertising paying for the bins. In addition, the company shares a portion of the revenue generated from advertising sales with the city. OutdoorPartner Media absorbs the cost of cleaning and maintaining the appearance of the units, and the city is responsible for disposing of the waste and recyclables.

Most recycling takes place in offices and residential areas. Prior to now, no one has taken recycling directly to the people in public spaces, said Ari Huber, president of OutdoorPartner Media, which has offices in Kingsport, Tenn., and Toronto. By offering this solution in Baltimore, the city is not only providing a vital service to its residents and customers, it is also helping to ensure that the city remains clean, inviting and attractive.
OutdoorPartner Media has enrolled six other locations in the United States, including Ocean City, MD. In addition to outdoor recycling, the bins also can provide recycling solutions in strip plazas, malls, stadiums, airports, public schools, subway stations and international resort destinations.
