Los Angeles City Council revives expansion of Red Line
While the Los Angeles City Council has no authority over the Red Line subway extension, its unanimous support will make the job easier for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the department responsible for building and running the subway. According the Los Angeles Times, the Council voted Tuesday to support the subway extension and directed city staff to support MTA’s efforts to build it. It also urged the reversal of two bans. The first, passed by voters in 1998, prohibits the use of local sales taxes for subway construction. The second obstacle is legislation that disallows the use of federal funds for tunneling in the area. Opponents say investing $300 million per mile to expand the Red Line subway west along the Wiltshire Corridor does not make sense. http://www.latimes.com/news/yahoo/la-me-subway29sep29,1,7595337.story?coll=la-newsaol-headlines
