Oakland, Calif., police officers halt DUI traffic stops
In Oakland, Calif., police officers have stopped setting up roadblocks to check whether drivers are under the influence because of a rash of complaints from the Latino community and City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente. Allowing officers to demand licenses and proof of insurance, the checkpoints are a way to get drunken drivers off Oakland’s streets, but after the checkpoints ensnared dozens of illegal immigrants who are not licensed to drive, questions arose. According to The Oakland Tribune, the pressure from De La Fuente and the complaints prompted the police chief to order his officers to hold off on any more DUI checkpoints while new guidelines are being drafted, although some councilmembers call the change a threat to public safety. http://www.dailyreviewonline.com/Stories/0,1413,88~10973~2428310,00.html
