Winston-Salem, N.C., votes in favor of stiffer zoning
The Winston-Salem, N.C., City Council voted 7-1 in favor of stiffer zoning requirements, just a few hours before the 90-day moratorium on large-scale projects expired. According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Council Member Vernon Robinson cast the vote against the rules, drafted after Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. submitted plans in March for a 223,000-square-foot supercenter in the area. Although the council tentatively approved the special-use-zoning requirement for developments of 125,000 square feet or larger Sept. 7, the lack of a majority vote forced a second vote on Monday. The new regulations subject large-scale projects to more scrutiny, and now the developers for the proposed Wal-Mart supercenter will have to resubmit plans. http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031778072033
