Nist Study Shows Computerized Fingerprint Matching Is Highly Accurate
A National Institute of Standards and Technology investigation into 34 commercially available computerized fingerprint systems from 18 companies finds that the best products are over 99 percent accurate.
The best performers were NEC, SAGEM, and Cogent products. A false positive rate of 0.01 percent was seen with the three.
The researchers also found that fingerprint quality affected results and that findings were more accurate when two fingers are looked at instead of one.
Although fingerprinting has long been part of law enforcement, it is increasingly being used for biometrics to improve the security of national borders.
