Chicago expands city surveillance system
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced a major expansion of the city’s surveillance system that will add 250 cameras and tie more than 2,000 existing cameras used by city agencies into the city’s 911 center. According to the Chicago Tribune, private sector companies also will be able to link security devices to the center as well. In what officials are saying could be the most extensive operation of its kind in the world, dispatchers will be able to see real-time images when emergencies are reported so they can direct police officers, firefighters and paramedics to where help is needed. Additionally, special software will flag suspicious activity, calling up the scene on video monitors when packages are left in public places or when a person falls to the ground. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/yahoo/chi-0409100247sep10,1,4655093.story?coll=chi-newsaol-headlines
