Sheriff Frank Anderson in Marion County, Ind., has proposed charging inmates in the county jail a $30-a-day fee to recoup the cost of housing them. Suggested as city and county officials presented bare-bones 2005 budgets this week, the idea has been used in dozens of other communities but could face a lawsuit from a civil liberties group. The proposal will be heard by the council’s Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee and includes a number of other fees, such as increasing inmates’ medical co-payments from $6 a visit to $15. http://www.indystar.com/articles/5/167616-5425-009.html
