EXTRA, EXTRA/Police department sells bobblehead cops
In its latest charity fundraiser, the Covington, Ga., Police Department has begun selling bobblehead dolls modeled after one of its patrol officers. The department contracted with Dunwoody, Ga.-based Ken Burrow & Co. this spring to manufacture a limited run of 1,000 dolls, which the department is selling for $10 at its headquarters, the Covington/Newton County D.A.R.E office and a local Wal-Mart. The proceeds from the toy sale benefit the department’s Police Who Care Fund, which provides financial assistance to families of killed or injured officers, as well as holiday gifts for needy families. The hand-painted, eight-inch-tall dolls represent in exacting detail a Covington patrol officer’s blue uniform, complete with badge, whistle string and handcuffs. The dolls went on sale after Thanksgiving to coincide with the holiday shopping season, and, if sales go well, the department plans to expand the series with a canine officer or a S.W.A.T officer next year.
