Chicago works to reduce trash buildup produced by strike
A strike by the Teamsters who handle garbage in Chicago for private waste haulers has the city scrambling to keep certain areas clean. According to The Associated Press (AP), “rats and other vermin scuttled through overflowing trash bins Monday as thousands of garbage haulers stayed off the job for a sixth day in a contract dispute.” The Department of Streets and Sanitation is collecting trash from smaller homes, hospitals and some public areas, the AP adds in its report. Mayor Richard Daley told the AP that the city will recover the money it is spending to collect trash from either the Teamsters, the association that represents the private waste haulers or both.
