Kansas City to look at hiring more animal control officers to license more pets
In an effort to collect more fees, Kansas City, Mo., officials are urging the city to step up its efforts to license area pets. According to the Kansas City Star, the city’s Neighborhood and Community Service Department will request that the City Council approve funding to hire five additional animal control officers, who would cruise the city searching for the owners of unlicensed animals. The city estimates that about 10 percent of pets in the city are licensed. A pet license costs $7 per year; Kansas City collected about $196,000 from licenses, according to the paper. “In other cities, the average compliance appears to be 30 to 50 percent,” David Park, assistant director of neighborhood and community services, told the newspaper. “We want to try to at least be at 30 percent.” For more information, visit
